why “follow your strategy and authority” is not helpful advice

especially for projectors

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of very generic advice online about Human Design. And this vagueness is not at all helpful – especially if you’re new to the concept of Human Design.

So. I’m going to explain why the “Follow your strategy and authority” advice needs work, and what to do instead.

Let’s look at an example.

Projectors: You must wait for the invitation

Projectors are one of the five energy types, and they make up approximately 20% of the population. Known as the guides and directors of energy, projectors are designed to offer both wisdom and insight to others. Projectors have a unique way of operating in the world that is tied to their strategy, which is to wait for the invitation.

This strategy is essential for projectors’ success and satisfaction, as their energy is more focused on guiding others rather than doing or initiating on their own.

BUT. Waiting for the invitation sounds passive. It can be hugely disheartening. It can also be a confronting and uncomfortable feeling. Especially when you need to make money. When you feel like you must do something.

Waiting doesn’t mean doing nothing; instead, think of it as an active process of self-preparation and alignment:

Cultivating your gifts

As a Projector, instead of feeling frustrated and in a passive state, you can learn, explore, and hone your skills so that when an invitation comes, you’re ready to step into your role as a guide.

Depending on your profile, you are free to dive into subjects, skills, or activities that excite you. This raises your frequency and naturally attracts recognition.

This can look like:

1st line - Researching and investigating

Core energy: Deep, foundational learning.

How it shows up: You love diving into the "why" and "how" behind things. Research, study, and knowledge are your comfort zones, and you’re most confident when you feel informed and prepared.

Purpose: Build a rock-solid foundation for yourself and others. You’re here to uncover truths and establish security through knowledge.

What it looks like: Hours spent reading, studying, and mastering topics that interest you.

2nd line - Hermiting in your own little world and doing things that come easily to you

Core energy: Innate talent and ease.

How it shows up: You have natural gifts that you may not even realize because they come so effortlessly. You often need time alone to recharge and tune into your own flow.

Purpose: You’re here to inspire others by embodying your natural talents, often being "called out" by others to share them.

What it looks like: Thriving in solitude, doing what you love, and being pulled out of your "hermit mode" by invitations or recognition.

3rd line - Experimenting and playing, figuring out how things work

Core energy: Trial and error/experimenting

How it shows up: You’re here to learn through experience. Mistakes aren’t failures; think of them as stepping stones to wisdom.

Purpose: To model resilience and resourcefulness by experimenting, failing, and finding what truly works.

What it looks like: Testing ideas, learning from challenges, and sharing your findings with others.

4th line - Interacting with your community, your people, and your networks

Core energy: Connection and influence.

How it shows up: Relationships and community are everything to you. Opportunities come through your network, and you thrive when surrounded by the right people.

Purpose: To build meaningful connections and leverage them to create opportunities for yourself and others.

What it looks like: Hosting gatherings, nurturing friendships, or networking effortlessly.

5th line - Looking at things from an uncommon viewpoint

Core energy: Visionary problem-solving.

How it shows up: You’re seen as someone who can solve problems and offer practical solutions. People project their hopes and expectations onto you, so boundaries are crucial.

Purpose: To offer new perspectives and actionable insights that create tangible change.

What it looks like: Observing from a distance, spotting inefficiencies, and presenting transformative ideas.

6th line - Sharing your wisdom with other people

Core energy: Evolving leadership.

How it shows up: Your life unfolds in three phases:

Trial-and-error (Birth to ~30): Similar to the 3rd line, you learn through experience and experimentation.

The rooftop phase (~30-50): You have a clear understanding of your purpose and can “see the whole picture”, integrate lessons, and refine your wisdom.

Role model (~50+): You step into your full power as a teacher and guide.

Purpose: To lead by example and share your unique wisdom, gained through lived experience.

What it looks like: Deep learning, reflection, and inspiring others with your maturity and perspective.

Important side note: Since Projectors don’t have a consistent energy source, make sure you’re balancing your productivity with rest to avoid burnout.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there’s lots of ways to “do” things while you’re waiting for that invitation to come.

I hope this article gives some comfort and reassurance to you if you need it. If you’re constantly hearing that you need to “use your strategy and authority”, to “have faith and believe”, this advice is neither actionable nor concrete and can feel pretty isolating.

If you’d like some help and could do with someone to walk you through your strategy and authority, I’m here for it. I’d be delighted to give you suggestions for what that may look like for your unique genius and design.

Because sometimes we need to be given an action to anchor ourselves.

The strategy of waiting for the invitation isn’t about passivity - it’s about alignment.
