what can human design teach you?
If you’re here, chances are, you’ve heard about HD. You’ve probably looked into your chart, your profile, and you want to learn more. Great news - you’re in exactly the right place.
Side note: If you haven’t heard about HD, you’re going to want to head to my What is Human Design article first (but be sure to come straight back).
The purpose of Human Design
As you probably know, HD is all about helping you align with your unique self. The next step is to figure out what HD can teach you because we’re all different.
HD is a holistic system that focuses on differentiation. It helps you break away from what society thinks is right for us, and instead, focus on rediscovering your individuality.
By unpicking your chart, you can understand more about yourself (and how to live your best life).
Your unique blueprint
By studying your HD chart, you can learn insights into your natural tendencies, preferences, and potential areas for growth.
For instance, you might discover that you are a Manifestor. Manifestors are designed to bring new ideas into the world. If this is the case for you, understanding your design can help you to embrace your role as a leader and innovator - instead of feeling pressured to fit into roles that don't suit you.
Similarly, if you are a Projector, recognizing your need for recognition and guidance can help you seek out environments where your talents are valued and appreciated.
Understanding your authority
Your authority is the unique way that you are designed to make decisions.
This concept emphasizes the importance of making choices that are aligned with your true self. Everyone has a specific authority based on their HD chart - it’s this that can guide you to make decisions that are best suited to your individual nature.
Types of HD authorities
Different authorities in HD correspond to various energy centers in the body.
Here’s a quick rundown:
Emotional authority: This is the most common authority and affects around 50% of the population. If you have emotional authority, your decision-making process is linked to your Solar Plexus. This means that you need to ride out your emotional waves to gain clarity. In other words, don’t go making any decisions when you are in a high or low emotional state. Give yourself time and space to become emotionally neutral before you leap!
Sacral authority: People with sacral authority rely on their gut responses. This authority is characterized by immediate, instinctual reactions to yes-or-no questions. If you have sacral authority, you will feel a physical response in your gut that guides you towards or away from certain decisions.
Splenic authority: This authority is based on intuitive insights that come from the Spleen. It’s all about spontaneous, in-the-moment knowing. If you have splenic authority, you will often get a quiet, subtle sense of what is right for you, which may not be logical - but it’s deeply intuitive.
Ego authority: This type of authority is centered in the Heart or Ego center and is about making decisions based on what you truly desire and what will empower you. It is less common and is found in some Manifestors and Projectors.
Self-projected authority: Found in Projectors, this authority involves speaking out loud to hear your truth. If you have self-projected authority, you will gain clarity by talking through your decisions with trusted friends or advisors.
Environmental (mental) authority: This authority is for Mental Projectors who need to discuss their decisions with others and reflect on their environment. The right setting and people are super important for these people to gain clarity.
Lunar authority: Unique to Reflectors, this authority requires waiting a full lunar cycle (about 28 days) to make major decisions. Reflectors need to sample different energies over time to gain a clear understanding of what is right for them.
Applying your HD authority
When you can both understand and apply your authority in your daily life, you can make more aligned and fulfilling decisions.
To help you integrate your authority into your decision-making process, I’ve got some tips for you:
Identify your authority: Use your HD chart to find your specific authority. This is the first step in aligning your decision-making process with your true self.
Practice patience: If you have Emotional or Lunar authorities, it’s important to give yourself time to reach clarity. Avoid making hasty decisions and allow your natural process to unfold.
Trust your body: Whether it's a gut feeling, a spontaneous insight, or a need to talk things out, trust the signals your body gives you. Your authority is your inner compass and will guide you towards decisions that are right for you.
Create supportive environments: For those with Environmental or Self-Projected authorities, being in the right environment and around supportive people can greatly impact your clarity and decision-making process.
Human Design: Examples
I love Human Design.
So I think it has unlimited case studies 😜
Read on to learn some elements of your life to start using HD:
Career alignment: Use HD to find a career path that aligns with your unique strengths and energy.
For example, people with emotional authority would be best to avoid making impulsive career decisions, and instead give themselves time to reach emotional clarity. Considering a job offer might be wise to wait a few days or even weeks to ensure their feelings stabilize before committing. This helps approach them to make decisions that are emotionally satisfying.
Folks with Ego authority make decisions driven by their willpower and desires. Career alignment for these individuals involves seeking roles that fulfill their personal ambitions and where they can assert their will. For instance, they should look for positions that allow them to express their desires and take charge - potentially leadership roles are a good fit.
Business growth: Entrepreneurs and business owners can use HD to make decisions that lead to more success, alignment, and ease.
An example of this is business owners with Environmental authority need to be in the right environment to make clear decisions. Choosing workspaces and business settings that feel energetically supportive and stimulating is vital. By contrast, Splenic authority business owners do best when they rely on their spontaneous, intuitive insights. Quick, in-the-moment decisions based on their instincts can guide them effectively in business - such as feeling an immediate sense of trust or distrust towards a potential business partner.
Relationship dynamics: Understanding HD can transform personal relationships too. By recognizing emotional patterns and decision-making processes, you can communicate more effectively and build stronger connections.
Let’s look at a couple of examples of relationship dynamics that can be boosted by following HD principles.
Because Sacral authority folks rely on their gut responses, it’s exactly the same when it comes to navigating relationships. They should pay attention to their immediate, instinctual reactions when interacting with others. If they feel a strong, positive gut response, it indicates a good connection.
Self-projected authority types need to talk through their thoughts and feelings to gain clarity in relationships. Communicating openly with trusted friends, family, or colleagues helps them understand their true feelings and intentions. This verbal processing is crucial for building deep, meaningful connections, as it allows them to express their authentic selves and understand others better.
